Onion River
Minnesota
Summary:
I visited this spot as my channel was just beginning, so I don’t have many images/videos. This was a fun spot to explore that was different than normal beachcombing for agates. The geology here seemed to have a significant amount of calcite.
To get here, park at the Ray Berglund State Wayside off of HWY 61. You can get here in any vehicle. Getting down to the river requires taking the well-worn footpath from the parking lot. There’s nice restrooms here as well as a scenic overlook, if I recall. My only regret was not walking further down the river!
Find: Calcite, fragile thomsonite, possible Lake Superior Agate nodules

Nearest city: Duluth, MN
Recommended Vehicle: Any

This big-toothed geode was found sticking right out of a basalt chunk. I was amazed to find something like that just sitting off a popular highway.

There were some really nice pieces of calcite around here too. They were very brittle.

I even made some friends on the beach.
