I wanted to create something that solved a few problems I had.
There are many popular sites that are great starting places to find places to collect interesting rocks. But they often are not maintained by someone who has actually visited the locations themselves.
I created this site to catalogue the places I’ve been, rocks I’ve found, and note things to prepare for if you’d like to visit yourself. Nothing like planning a trip to Oregon in November only to discover it snows there… (Glass Butte, 2022 pictured here)
My only instructions are to enjoy the adventure, but be courteous and cautious - especially if going out solo.
Plan for your surroundings
Rock collecting is a hobby that will take you to some very remote places where preparation has high importance. That second flashlight, tire patch kit, or bear spray aren’t just extra clutter.
Taking rocks? Take some junk
I believe we can collectively do more than simply not littering. I pack a shopping bag to round up a small amount of junk if I come across it when finding rocks.
Check land ownership
I try to the best of my ability to both make sure that collection is allowed in places listed on this site and keep them updated. Be mindful that many locations I’ve listed border private property or could have private mineral claims within them.
Please be courteous of the property of others to keep our hobby in good standing.
Thanks guys!
