Unsuccessful Location
Find: Possible Lake Superior Agates and other minerals typical to Lake Superior
GPS: 46.81907, -89.63405
Nearest city: Ironwood, MI
Recommended Vehicle: Any
Summary:
This was a spot I was pointed to after heading to the boat launch just down the street, where it was mainly bedrock. I didn’t find anything worthwhile here and it was not easy to get around without waders on.
While I think you can certainly find agates and nice Lake Superior finds, you’d have to get in the water and have a very calm day. There wasn’t much in terms of exposed rock here.
I include less-productive spots like this on the website to hopefully save you a trip. They often look enticing from a satellite map but aren’t the best beaches for rockhounding. However, the powerful waves may change the beach over time and you could have better luck.
You can reach this spot with any vehicle.

If I could only bring 3 tools…
Chest Waders
Chest waders were the single best investment I made for exploring the shores of Lake Superior.
Agate Scoop
An agate scoop is helpful for both keeping dry and picking up rocks faster. You don’t need a fancy one. Mine is a golf club welded to a kitchen scoop.
Classifier
A classifier is helpful if you’re a fan of small agates and stones. One with a larger, 1-inch mesh would be what I’d pick.
