Summary:

Round Mountain is tucked away in the far Eastern portion of Arizona. It is exceptionally remote and takes commitment to access.

The easiest way to access the site is actually from New Mexico. A long gravel road will cross you back into Arizona and at the end, you will find a loop road with signs designating the rockhounding area.

You will find interesting variations in the material based on where you are within the large expanse of land out here. I have found 4-5 inch fully complete agate geodes here, as well as a small amount of true fire agates with chatoyancy. Chatoyancy is the flashing effect you see that gives fire agates their distinct shimmer and range of colors from iridescent greens to deep reds.

If you plan to do the full loop, you will want a vehicle with off-road tires, 4x4, and high clearance. It is really chopped up and not maintained throughout the loop. You could probably make it down the main gravel road access in a Subaru Outback or something similar, however and you will find plenty!

If I could only bring 3 tools…

Geology Pick

A geology pick was helpful to overturn and pry out buried stones.

Hammer and Chisel

If you wander around for long enough, you may come across agate nodules in matrix here. The volcanic matrix rock easily pops apart and releases them.

Water Bladder

You’re in the remote parts of the desert out here. Drink plenty of water and keep ample amounts to refill in your vehicle, in separate containers in case of leaks.
