Geode Hill
Arizona
Summary:
Geode Hill was a really unexpected surprise. Arizona isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind if you asked me where to find geodes. I think of Kentucky, Indiana, etc. After my visit, I can say this has to be one of Arizona’s best rockhounding spots for families, and the elevation helps moderate the weather. That being said, I’d suggest visiting sometimes besides the dead of Winter.
Even with snow, I was still able to find plenty of geodes. It’s a short hike up a small hill. You’ll start seeing the calcite geodes appear as you ascend. Be aware, this is an area where bears may be present. There’s some homes very close by this spot, so please take extra precaution to stay on public land.

Geode Hill following some Winter storms.

It's a great spot to go rockhounding for geodes, even in the wrong season.

The geodes accumulate in little piles after weathering out of the surrounding rock.

Many of the geodes here are somewhat "pancake" like. I would suggest targeting sphere-shaped geodes for the best chance of finding good crystal inside.

A fragment offers us a peek at what the crystal inside these looks like.

Bear scat?

Not sure what animal caused the gouges in the trees, but I'd bet it was either antlers or claws that left this mark.
